Somali Troops Clash With Al Shabaab In Lower Shabelle Region

Somali government forces engaged in a deadly gunfight with the Al Qaeda-linked militant group Al Shabaab in the southern Lower Shabelle region on Friday, officials said.

The battle flared up after Somali military launched an ambush attack against Al Shabaab in areas near Awdhegle district, sparking hours-long combat between the two sides.

Local residents in Aybutey village said the fighting was so intense and both warring sides have exchanged heavy and small weaponry, causing an unspecified number of casualties.

Al Shabaab has not so far released a statement regarding the Friday’s clashes in Lower Shabelle region which has been the scene of previous deadly gunbattles.
