What does Eid Mubarak mean? How do you reply to Eid Mubarak?
EID AL FITR starts the end of Ramadan and will see millions of Muslims around the world finally able to have their first daylight meal in a month. What does Eid Mubarak mean and how do you reply to it?

Every year Muslims refrain from food, drink and other indulgences from dawn to dusk for 30 days. The only meals allowed are the Iftar before sunrise and the Suhoor after sunset. Ramadan culminates with the festival of Eid, which starts on the end of Ramadan & continues for tree days.

What does Eid Mubarak mean?

Eid Mubarak is the traditional phrase Muslims will greet one another with during Eid.

Eid Mubarak translates directly to “blessed celebration” and can mean “have a blessed celebration”.

The phrase translates differently across languages with a number of meanings.

How do you respond to Eid Mubarak?

The proper response to Eid Mubarak is “Khair Mubarak”.

Khair Mubarak wishes goodness on the person who has greeted you.

For those who wish to take it a step further, the slightly more complex “JazakAllah Khair” literally translates to “May Allah reward you with goodness”.

What do Muslims do during Eid al Fitr?

Eid al Fitr features two to three days of celebration in which Muslims will regularly feast and meet their family members.

Throughout the few days of Eid, Muslims engage in regular prayer and sermons and progress between the homes of their close relatives bearing sweets, wishing one another a happy Eid.

Revellers will give gifts to children and those in need.

In Muslim majority countries such as Saudi Arabia, Eid-Al Fitr is a national holiday.

These countries will also decorate city buildings with Eid ornaments and open Ramadan markets.

In the UK this isn’t the case, but Muslims may decide to take the day off regardless.

UK-based Muslims will also gather in mosques and open spaces for prayer and revelry.

Dr Zahid Aziz told Birmingham Live the methods used to calculate the Eid New Moon every year are flawed.

He said: “While it is true that Saudi Arabia makes the announcement, it was in fact astronomically impossible for the new moon to be sighted in Saudi Arabia, or indeed anywhere in the world,

“This is confirmed by the HM Nautical Almanac Office.

“The moon does not abide by the dictates of any religious scholars or any government of the world.”
