Mursal Abdirahman Elected As The New Somali Parliament Speaker
A former Defense Minister has been elected the new speaker of Somalia’s Lower House of Parliament, local media outlets have reported.
Lawmakers converged on Monday to elect a new speaker following the long-drawn political crisis that led to the resignation of Mohamed Osman Jawari.
The first deputy speaker of the federal parliament Abdiweli Mudey announced the results of the votes immediately after the election was concluded.
“Mohamed Mursal acquired 147 votes while Ibrahim Yarrow Isak got 118 votes, therefore Mohamed Mursal was officially elected as the new speaker of the parliament,” Mudey said.
Mursal was the former defense minister of the federal government before he stepped down and vie for the position of speaker.
