The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia and his delegation are in China looking for a major source of investment in Somalia and discussions on trade and economic cooperation with China and some African countries.

The President is attending the China-Africa Cooperation Forum which kicked off on Monday in Beijing with the attendance of Africa leaders.

Radio Shabelle has conducted a Vox Pop to know the view of the public on Somalia’s expectation from the ongoing China-Africa forum and benefits of having trade cooperation with Ethiopia, a land-locked nation in East Africa with no sea and ports, whose population is the largest in the continent.

Abdullahi Sheikh Nur Mohamud, a lecturer at one of the universities in Mogadishu is pessimistic about the current efforts by the President Farmajo to make Somalia open for business and investment.

For his part, Mursal Mohamud Abdi underlined that the Tripartite trade Partnership is a significant achievement to the country, now recovering two decades of conflict and on the path to recovery.

He stressed that Somalia would require a market for its products just like Ethiopia, which is eager to use the seaports of the country as the main gateway of their imports from overseas.

Lastly, Ayan Abdillahi welcomed the collaboration between Somalia and China but expressed her deep concern that trade relations with Ethiopia might have a negative effect, calling Ethiopia should not be trusted.

Farmajo’s working trip to China and the partaking of the China-Africa cooperation forum is a milestone victory for the country and its people since China is the second largest economic power in the world.

China has always supported Somalia in preserving its national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on last Friday, pledging China’s support for Somalia’s development.

During the meeting, Xi congratulated the Somali government’s achievements in the peace and reconstruction process and will continuously support the country in its efforts to advance the political process, promote social reconciliation and enhance its governance capacity.
