Somali President Jets Off To Eritrea For Three-Day State Visit

Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has left Mogadishu for Asmara, the capital of Eritrea for a 3-day State visit, Somali and Eritrean ministers of information confirmed.

Eritrea’s information minister announced the three-day visit of Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed on Twitter, saying it comes at the invitation of Eritrea’s longtime leader Isaias Afwerki.

“On the invitation of President Isaias Afwerki, the President of the Republic of Somalia, H.E. Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed, will pay a three-day visit to Eritrea,” Meskel said in a Twitter post, “President Mohammed Abdullahi and his delegation are scheduled to arrive in Asmara tomorrow morning.”

According to a statement released by the office of the President, Farmajo will meet with his counterpart Isaias Afwerki during his stay in Asmara, and discuss bilateral relations.

Farmajo will be the second East African leader to pay a visit to Eritrea since Asmara and Addis Ababa agreed to bury the hatchet and restored their diplomatic ties.

Eritrea remains under United Nations sanctions after alleged support for the Somalia-based al-Shabab militants. An accusation that Eritrea has repeatedly denied it.
