Fugitive Minister Janan arrives in Nairobi as Jubland Planning Minister resigns

Jubbaland Security Minister Abdirashid Janan who escaped custody in Mogadishu where he was facing charges arrived in Nairobi Friday after arriving in Kismayu by boat.

Jubbaland Security Minister Abdirashid Janan who escaped custody in Mogadishu where he was facing charges arrived in Nairobi Friday after arriving in Kismayu by boat.

Multiple sources have confirmed to HOL that Janan arrived in the Kenyan capital Friday afternoon aboard a private plane. Sources added the minister accused of human rights violations sought medical treatment in a city hospital.

The circumstances surrounding Janan’s escape from custody in Mogadishu remained scanty but sources said the former Dolow district commissioner escaped through a tunnel and made way to Kismayu. It was however not clear where he boarded a boat to Kismayu.

In Kismayu Friday, Janan was received by state government officials where he stayed briefly before boarding a flight to Nairobi.

Meanwhile Jubbaland Planning Minister Adam Aw Hersi announced Friday his resignation noting ‘Conscience does not allow me to be a part of an administration that celebrates, harbors a fugitive accused of human rights violations.’.

The arrival of Hersi in Nairobi coincides with the presence of leaders from Jubbaland and Puntland in the Kenyan capital. Jubbaland’s Ahmed Madobe, Puntland’s Abdullahi Dani and his predecessor Ali Gaas among other leaders from Darod clan have been meeting in Nairobi in the last one week.

It is not clear if Somali government will be seeking the repatriation of Janan from Kenya to face charges in Mogadishu.

Jubbaland government accused the Federal Government this week of holding Janan for five months without charges following his arrest last August.
