Elders Travel To Northern Somali Town To End Inter-Clan Fighting

Traditional traders from three towns in northern Somalia have arrived in Dhumay village in southern Sool region to gear up efforts to end clan clashes in the area.

Last week, Fighting between two clans in the village claimed lives more than 50 people and injured dozens.

According to reports, the elders are expected to meet with representatives from both sides to quell the hostility in the area.

Elder, Suleiman Burale Adan who is one of the elders dispatch to meet the sides told the media that they are committed to convincing the sides to bury the hatchet and participate in a peace conference to be held by the elders.

“Elders from Garowe, Las-Anod, and Buhodle towns have arrived in the area to urged the sides to end the fighting in Dhumay village, we are hoping that there would be a solution to end the hostility,” he said.

The elder called on humanitarian agencies to deliver aid in the area where thousands have been displaced by the clan clashes.

Dhumey is in an area which has been claimed by both Somaliland and Puntland for years.

There had been clan clashes in the village and other neighboring localities which claimed the lives of many people mostly fighting sides.

Arguments over land use, boreholes and pasture have perennially contributed to fighting among Somali clans who are largely pastoralists.
