The Somali National Army (SNA) announced that a battle-hardened Al-Shabaab operative had surrendered to officers operating in South West State on Saturday.

The SNA’s 60th Division said that Adan Shinyow Ibrahim, an Al-Shabaab fighter for over ten years, surrendered himself without incident.

Upon interrogation, Ibrahim confessed to taking part in battles against government forces across south and central Somalia, including the Gedo, Hiran, Bay and Bakool regions.

Ibrahim also admitted to meeting with senior Al-Shabaab officials, including their spokesman Ali Mohamed Rage (Ali Dhere) and Fuad Mohamed Qalaf (Shongole) – both of whom have been identified by the US as Specially Designated Global Terrorists and placed under sanctions.

In August, two senior Al-Shabaab fighters surrendered to government forces in the Galgadud region.
