Al-Shabaab Attacks AMISOM Base With Mortars

The Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab militants have launched a mortar attack against AMISISOM military base outside Somali capital Mogadishu on Saturday night, sources said.

The attack began with mortar rounds fired at the AU base located in Arbacow area before both sides engaged in a heavy gunfight that raged on for several minutes.

Residents said Al-Shabaab fighters encountered a fierce resistance from the Burundian forces of AMISOM contingent during the overnight ambush attack.

There was no immediate confirmation of the casualties on both sides as well as civilians as result of the battle took place on the outskirts of Mogadishu.

Al-Shabaab stepped up attacks against Somali and AU forces in southern Somalia over the past few months as part of its struggle to oust the Western-backed Somali government.
