Two landmine attacks targeting Somali army deputy and a district official hit Mogadishu Sunday barely three hours apart.

In the first attack around mid-morning, Somali National Army deputy chief of staff General Abbas Amin Ali survived but at least three soldiers were killed and a motor road user.

General Ali’s convoy drove into the landmine along Abdi Qassim road in Hodan district in Mogadishu. A bajaj driver was among the dead according to sources in the area.

It was not immediately clear if General Ali was harmed as he was immediately rushed to army headquarters.

At about 2 pm, the convoy of Yashiid district commissioner Ahmed Abdullahi Ariif hit another landmine in Darusalam area on the outskirts of the capital Mogadishu. The scale of the harm was not immediately clear but sources said there may have been casualties.

The militant group Al-Shabaab which has intensified attacks in the country in recent weeks claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The US warned last week of further instability in the country following long-running disputes over elections.

The terms of the Federal Parliament and President Mohamed Farmaajo have already lapsed.
