Somalia’s FM Holds Meeting With Sudanese PM In Khartoum

The two officials discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries.

In a Twitter post, Awad said he shared with the prime minister Somalia’s keenness to bolster the cooperation and relationship with Sudan.

“It is an honor to have had fruitful and engaging discussions with H.E @SudanPMHamdok on the sidelines of the IGAD/EU consultative meeting in #Khartoum,” said Awad. “Sudan is an ally and a reliable friend of #Somalia. I shared with PM Hamdok our commitment to upholding existing strong relations.”

Minister Awad and other delegates from Somalia have been in Sudan for the last three days to attend a meeting between Intergovernmental Authority on Development.

During the meeting, the representatives from both blocs exchanges ideas on strong cooperation.
They also indicated that new initiatives on the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden offer unparalleled opportunities for economic integration and conflict resolution.

All sides welcomed the formation of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RT-GoNU) in South Sudan and reiterated their support for the peace process and the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

The EU and IGAD also expressed support for the reform agenda of Somalia and underlined the need for the speedy implementation of the political, security and economic reforms needed ahead of next year’s elections.
All sides emphasized their desire to consolidate regular dialogue between the EU and the IGAD Member States, while IGAD Ministers expressed their appreciation for the EU’s constructive role in the region.

At the end of the meeting, European Union (EU) announced it is committing to help the IGAD Member States to combat the dramatic desert locust invasion in the Horn of Africa with a contribution of 11 Million Euros.
