Journalists across Somalia on Thursday held a virtual session to share experiences on challenges facing them and success stories in their practice.

Journalists across Somalia on Thursday held a virtual session to share experiences on challenges facing them and success stories in their practice.

The virtual seminar hosted by US embassy in Mogadishu presented an opportunity for journalists to exchange ideas on how to handle complex and consequential stories across newsrooms.

Somali Journalists Syndicate Secretary General  Abdalle Mumin shared examples of influential stories, highlighted challenges faced by journalists, and offered ideas to enhance Media Freedom in Somalia.

“The resilience of the Somali media begins with the safety of the journalists and the diversity of its leadership, and diversity of the media programming. Our media institutions, unfortunately, do not invest in its professionals. This must change,” said Abdalle Mumin.

 

Bradley Meacham of the US embassy stressed the need for media freedom as instrumental to enabling journalists robustly report on some of the key developments in the country.

The seminar was attended by 28 journalists from across Somalia.
