Somali businessman and aviator Captain Ali Noor Abdi has entered the parliamentary race in western Kenya joining the growing list of Somalis who are seeking leadership in areas away from their backyard.

While on the campaign trail Sunday in Matayos centre in Busia county, Captain Abdi urged residents to register as voters for the August 2021 general elections.

Abdi said he chose to join the parliamentary race to address challenges facing the area which the incumbent MP and those before him have failed to resolve.

Captain Abdi joins the league of the firebrand Suna East MP Junet Mohamed whose family relocated from Mandera to Migori in western Kenya in 1970s.

Mohamed became the mayor of Migori town in 2013 and later joined parliament in 2013 on an ODM party ticket.

He is the minority leader in the National Assembly and close ally of opposition leader Raila Odinga.
