Miraa Worth Ksh.25 Million Torched In Lamu As Coronavirus Fight Intensifies

Authorities in Lamu County on Sunday torched at least 70 sacks of miraa worth an approximate value of Ksh.25 million as part of efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Authorities in Lamu County on Sunday torched at least 70 sacks of miraa worth an approximate value of Ksh.25 million as part of efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19.

This came after the entry and sale of miraa in the county was on April 1, 2020, banned by County Commissioner Irungu Macharia in the war against the coronavirus pandemic.

The consignment, which was being transported in two boats, was nabbed by Kenya Navy officers patrolling the Indian Ocean early Sunday morning.

Authorities told Citizen Digital that the miraa was reportedly being smuggled to Somalia before it was intercepted.

The navy officers handed the consignment over to the Kenya Coast Guard Service who then set it ablaze at Kitau beach on the Manda Island.

The locals commended the action saying it would help in containing the novel coronavirus.
