Somali government forces backed by suspected US troops launched a raid on Al-Shabaab-controlled key town in Lower Shabelle region on Sunday night, residents said.
The allied forces using attack helicopters swooped into Toratorow and subsequently engaged in a fierce battle with the militants in the area.
There was no immediate report of the casualties on both sides and the civilians.
Several business centers were burned and reduced to ashes during the combat.
In the past few months, Somali and AU troops stepped up attacks against Al-Shabaab strongholds in Lower Shabelle region of southern Somalia.
