Four killed in latest IED incident in Kenya
Four people were killed on Thursday morning after a vehicle they were travelling in ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) in Kenya’s Garissa County.
The four were part of five family members travelling from Masalani to Holugho when the incident happened.
According to Kenya-based newspaper, The Star, the driver survived the incident with major injuries and is currently in a hospital.
Thursday’s incident is the third involving an IED in Kenya since late January.
Seven people died when a bus traveling in Mandera County rolled over an IED on January 31. Four people were killed in another IED attack in Wajir, Kenya on February 2. All three attacks took place in an area along Kenya’s border with Somalia. Kenyan authorities suspect al-Shabaab militants operating in the region are responsible.
Kenya is currently on high-security alert following warnings by foreign embassies in late January of a possible terror attack.
The French, German, Dutch and U.S. warned their nationals of a “real risk” of places frequented by foreigners, such as restaurants, hotels and shopping centers, being targeted for terror attacks.
