Farmaajo opens fourth round of electoral talks in Mogadishu

Talks on finding an electoral compromise for the upcoming elections in Somalia today kicked off  after delays for three times.

President Farmaajo opened the talks at Villa Somalia Sunday following the arrival of Federal Member State presidents to Mogadishu in the last one week. Attending the talks also is Banaadir Regional

Governor Omar Filish who also doubles up as the mayor of Mogadishu.

A statement from Villa Somalia noted the meeting was based on consensus and key to resolving the country’s electoral stalemate. “

 

“The President welcomes the efforts of the Heads of Federal States and Government of Benadir Region to attend the conference, as it is now unanimous that this conference is important for the implementation of the country’s elections,” the statement read in part.

The six leaders are expected to deliberate and agree on the way forward on the model and manner in which the upcoming parliamentary elections will be held.

The meeting is the fourth one and came up following failure by Puntland and Jubbaland leaders to attend the third round in Dhusamareb.

Parliamentary elections are supposed to start by around November when the term of the current Federal Parliament lapses. The term of the current president ends in February 2021.
