Canada: Liberal Ahmed Hussen wins York South-Weston

Ahmed Hussen has won the riding of York South-Weston for the Liberals.

Ahmed Hussen has won the riding of York South-Weston for the Liberals.

The vote secures a third term for Hussen, who has served in cabinet as minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship and as minister of families, children and social development.

He’s represented the riding in the House of Commons since 2015.

Hussen came to Canada as a refugee from Somalia at age 16. He became a lawyer, and gained political experience in the Ontario Legislative Assembly and as an adviser to premier Dalton McGuinty.

Hussen has sat on the boards of Journalists for Human Rights and a foundation that aims to help women in East Africa access post-secondary education.

He was challenged by the NDP’s Hawa Mire, a local organizer and non-profit executive; Conservative Sajanth Mohan, who’s worked as a pastor and community advocate; the Greens’ Nicki Ward, a conservationist and science and technology consultant; and the People’s Party’s Sitara Chiu, a civil engineer.
