Hargeisa: A woman arrested after live debate calling for loosening of dresscode rules

Police in Somaliland have arrested a woman in Hargeisa who demanded that the Somaliland government pass a law allowing women to walk with attire that goes against the cultural and religious values in the region.

newsinsieThe woman, who goes by Bulo Qareen Hayaama on Facebook, made the comments during a live TV debate.

Somaliland’s Minister of Religious Affairs, Abdirizak Hussein Ali Albani, confirmed to the media that police had arrested the woman and that an investigation was underway into alleged misconduct.

“The security forces have taken action. When a person commits an unethical act, we must act. The security forces have arrested her, and they are investigating,” he said.

Hayaama’s TV debate on dress codes came after a woman wearing a shirt and trousers was arrested at a market in Hargeisa last week.
