The attack came after heavily armed militants launched an assault against South-West state troops travelling in a convoy in the vicinity of Deynunay in Bay region.
The skirmish has led the death of one regional soldier and injured a number of others, according to local authorities who spoke to Radio Shabelle via phone.
There were no immediate reports of casualties on civilians as well as Al-Shabaab side.
South-West state forces backed by Somali army and AMISOM have been in a battle with Al-Shabaab in the region for years as the militants continue to hold key areas between the major town.
