Former Somali basketball player Hassan Farah has died in London after a long illness, the family has said but denied claims he died of COVID-19.

Former Somali basketball player Hassan Farah has died in London after a long illness, the family has said but denied claims he died of COVID-19.

A family member of the deceased told Farah popularly known as Maalim John succumbed to the illness in the early hours of Monday but did not disclose the cause of his death.

Prior to his death, Maalim John was a coach and previously played for the Somali national basketball team.

The death of Maalim John adds to three the number of former Somali national players who have died in less than two months.

Former footballer Abdulkadir Mohamed Farah Biriq died of COVID-19 in March 26 while basketballer Bana Ali succumbed to the disease April 28.
