Suspected Al-Shabaab Kill 5 Kenyan Soldiers In Liboi
At least five General Service Unit (GSU) officers have been killed by suspected al-Shabaab in Liboi, Garissa County.
Three other officers were left in critical condition after the vehicle they were travelling in was blown by an improvised explosive device (IED).
Reports reaching Radio Shabelle on Wednesday, June 6, indicated the attack happened at around 9 am at a place called Harar in Liboi, a few metres from the Kenya-Somalia border.
Confirming the attack, Dadaab Deputy County Commissioner Harun Kamau said the officers were on normal patrol when the vehicle they were travelling in ran over an IEB that was planted by people believed to be members of the militia group al-Shabaab.
“The injured officers were airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment,” Kamau said as quoted by Daily Nation.
Reinforcement has reportedly been dispatched to the region to pursue the attackers.
Garissa County is one of the regions that have been prone to al-Shabaab attacks that have left behind a trail of deaths.
Recent reports show the terrorists have been targeting police officers and soldiers deployed in the region to flush them out and protect the Kenya-Somalia border.
