The race to occupy the office left by the immediate former Southwest president, Sharif Hassan kicks off officially today as all the presidential candidates are expected to present their papers.

Southwest state electoral commission has commenced the nominations of the potential presidential candidates of the state on Sunday.

About eight presidential hopefuls are expected to present the papers for clearance until tomorrow.

The commission directed the candidates to beat the deadline and submit their applications to participate in the elections scheduled next month.

The candidates were urged to comply with the timelines as there would be no extension, according to a statement by the commission.

The regional electoral Committee of South West state is expected to hold the state’s presidential election on 5th of next month.

The winner of next month will replace the state’s former president Sharif Hassan who resigned on Nov. 7 and withdrew from the upcoming election, after he cited widespread interference of the poll.

Major contenders for the presidential election include former finance minister Mohamed Aden Fargeti and Sheikh Mukhtar Robow, a co-founder of the al-Shabab. Robow has since abandoned Al-Shabaab group.
