Somaliland President Wants For Dialogue Over Northern Regions Dispute

Somaliland president, Muse Bihi Abdi has on Monday called for peace talks to resolve the escalating dispute with Puntland over the ownership of the northern Sool region.

The conflict between Puntland and Somaliland in the region has been brewing since last January as their two armies have repeatedly engaged deadly clashes at Tukaraq village.

Hundreds of people are assumed to have died from both sides, while thousands of the local inhabitants have fled the area fearing for their lives.

However, Somaliland leader has expressed hope of a breakthrough to end the military stand-off in the region through dialogue.

His remarks come after Puntland president Abdiwlei Mohamed Ali “Gaas”has announced a liberation offensive on Somaliland forces in Sool and Sanaag regions.

Somaliland in the northwest, declared independence from the rest of Somalia in 1991, but has since failed to win international recognition.
