Somaliland National Election Commission Set A Timeframe for The Elections

A spokesperson for the commission in the capital Hargeisa said a schedule for the elections had been adopted. “Acting independently and according to articles 37/2007, 20/2001, 20/2005 of the Constitution, the Commission has issued the schedule for the municipal and parliamentary elections.” She noted that they were engaged in making sure credible registration and the election happen in the earliest possible period.

The official added that the process consists of three stages namely preparation for voter registration, voter registrations, and thirdly the holding municipal and parliamentary elections. The preparations will run for nine months upon which elections will happen ‘depending on funding and judicial aspects.’

Waddani Party chairman Abdirahman Irro said the political parties had agreed with the Commission on way forward to hold elections.

 

“The NEC and the three national political parties(WADDANI, UCID and KULMIYE) today finalised their ongoing discussions regarding the time for the overdue House of Representatives and local governments elections. They agreed elections to be held within nine months and that will be in May 2021.”

Parliamentary and municipal elections in Somaliland have been delayed severally since the last elections in 2005. Children born when the current parliament came to being have now attained voting age.
