Somaliland court acquits journalist Oldon of falsehood charges

A court in Hargeisa of Somalia’s breakaway Somaliland region has today acquitted Abdimalik Oldon, a journalist and humanitarian activist after the prosecutors failed to table evidence of disinformation charges labelled against the defendant.

Oldon was arrested last August in Burao on charges of spreading lies about Abaarso School and Barwaqo University.

In a Facebook post, Oldon accused the two learning institutions of propagating Christianity in Somaliland, a move that angered the board of the institutions and the parents of the children.

Marodijeeh Regional Court based in Hargeisa town has today declared Oldon a free man and dropped the allegations. Hours later after Oldon was freed, the prosecutors vowed to appeal against the court’s ruling.
