Somali President Mohamed Farmaajo has extended his congratulatory message to President-Elect Joe Biden following his victory Saturday.

Farmaajo said his country looked forward to working with the new Biden administration echoing remarks by a host of other world leaders.

“Congratulations President-elect of the United States of America Joe Biden and VP-elect Kamala Harris,” Farmaajo said.  “Somalia wishes you success in your endeavors. We look forward to close cooperation and partnership.”

The Somali leader noted the US remained a strong ally in the country’s recovery process.

During the Trump presidency, Somalia was grouped in the list of seven Muslim countries dubbed the ‘Muslim Ban’ which restricted citizens of these countries from entering the US.

With a new occupant at the White House, Somalia hopes these restrictions which were widely condemned will be eased.

Biden beat Trump Saturday evening to become the 46th president of the US after projections by major media outlets showed him surpassing the 270 threshold.

President Trump has since maintained he is mounting legal challenges against the election results.
