Somali President Heading To Turkey For Erdoğan’s Inauguration

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo will be attending the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected Turkish President.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had won tightly contested presidential polls which took place last Month.

According to Turkish Yeni Akit Newspaper, President Farmajo will be among 17 leaders invited to attend Erdoğan’s oath-taking ceremony.

The inauguration ceremony will take place on 9th July in Ankara town.

Somali presidency has not yet confirmed the invitation by the Turkish government.

President Farmajo was among several world leaders supportive of Erdogan who congratulated him on his victory in last Month’s elections.

Venezuela, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Guinea, Zambia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, and Georgia are other countries to be represented by their presidents during the ceremony.

According to AP, the list of attendees include Western Balkan countries that are important for President Erdoğan’s policy of increasing Turkey’s influence in the Balkans, as well as countries from Africa which Erdoğan sees a priority as a result of Africa’s economic potential.

Erdogan carried out a historic change in Turkey since his Islamic-rooted ruling party first came to power in 2002 after years of secular domination.

Turkish president has for the last two years ruled under a state of emergency imposed in the wake of the 2016 failed coup, with tens of thousands arrested in an unprecedented crackdown which cranked up tensions with the Western countries.
