Somali forces Saturday captured the head of Al-Shabaab intelligence in Janaale in Lower Shabelle region days after it held control of the areas which had been under the grip of the militant group.

The military said Saturday it arrested Hassan Suleyt alias Hassan Ganey, the head of the group’s intelligence in the district. According to Somali Army forced commander Abdihamid Mohamed, Ganey was captured alongside two other operatives.

The capture of Ganey, which is a major boost for the military came barely a day after the soldiers captured the group’s leader in Janaale.

Somali forces wrested control of Janaale this past week from Al-Shabaab scoring a major win since the area had been one of Shabaab’s remaining strongholds.

A U.S Africa Command spokesman quoted by VOA on Friday said multiple airstrikes around Janaale last week killed 15 Al-Shabaab militants ‘who were battling African Union and Somali forces.’

An operation Saturday by Somali forces in Bulo Gadud in Lower Jubba killed 27 militants according to military officials who spoke to the media.
