Senate Speaker Begins Efforts To Defuse Current Political Turmoil

The Upper House of Somalia’s Federal parliament started significant efforts to resolve the dispute between the speaker of the Lower House chamber and the country’s president.

Senate chairman, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, has held various meetings with Mohamed Mursal, the speaker of the House of the People in and other government leaders in Mogadishu.

The meetings focused on ways to achieve a real solution to ongoing political tension in the country after MPs tabled impeachment motion against President Farmajo this week.

The Senate has been working in the past on the mediation between the central government and the Federal Member states who are in deadlock over national resource-sharing and foreign aid.

Hundreds of people took to the streets in Mogadishu on Monday in protest against the move aimed to oust the president by the members of the Somali parliament.
