Puntland presidential guard commander Col. Osman Mohamed has been killed in a clash with local militias in Galkaayo.

Puntland presidential guard commander Col. Osman Mohamed has been killed in a clash with local militias in Galkaayo.

Sources in the eastern regional state noted Col. Mohamed succumbed to bullet wounds after his forces clashed with the militias who were occupying an abandoned factory building the town located in Mudug region.

The militias are reported to have turned down orders to leave leading to a confrontation which resulted in gunfire. It was not immediately if there were other casualties in the mid-morning incident.

The young officer was appointed in May by president Abdullahi Deni sparking public spat with his deputy Ahmed Kaarash who protested the changes in the presidential guard.
