President Farmajo Jets Off To Saudi Arabia For Arab League Summit

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and a high-level delegation he is leading left Mogadishu for Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

The President accompanied high-ranking government officials is expected to attend the Arab League summit scheduled to kick off Sunday in Riyadh, according to sources at Villa Somalia.

Farmajo will meet with several Arab leaders, including King Salman Bin Abdulaziz of Saudia Arabia to discuss the escalating diplomatic tensions between Somalia and the UAE.

The President’s trip to Saudi Arabia which marks the 3rd since he took office in February 2017, comes nearly a week after Somali government seized $9.6 million cash from UAE at Mogadishu Airport.

The seizure of the cash followed accusations that the UAE is interfering the political crisis besetting the country’s Lower House Chamber of Federal Parliament.
