Mogadishu Mayor Attends An International Conference In Geneva

A two-day conference organized by the United Nations opened in Geneva. The conference will address the humanitarian needs of the refugees around the globe and will come up with solutions to attend to the needs of the refugees and the internally displaced people.

High profile guest including donors from all over the world attended this conference, it gives the participants an opportunity to work together and address the key humanitarian aspects of the refugees and the internally displaced people.

A high-level delegation led by the governor of Benadir region and mayor of Mogadishu, Abdirahman Omar Osman who arrived Geneva on Tuesday represent Somalia in this conference.

The mayor has presented the difficulties and needs of the thousands of internally displaced people in Mogadishu that ran from the droughts and conflicts in the regions to the conference.

“Somalia is recovering from the difficulties that resulted from the civil war in the country which caused the displacement of thousands of families. We are now planning to re-settle and create a better life for over 500,000 people who were displaced from Benadir region” said Mogadishu mayor.

The mayor also urged the international community to support the efforts of Benadir administration to get a lasting solution to problems of the displaced people on employment, resettlement and provision of essential services to the lives of the people.

The mayor will also meetings with other mayors in the sidelines of the refugee conference in Geneva.

According to UN agencies, an estimated 1.1 million IDPs currently live in Somalia, and at least 548,000 additional people have been displaced since November 2016 due to the drought.

Most people displaced by drought left rural parts of Bay, Lower Shabelle, and Sool and settled in urban areas such as Mogadishu and Baidoa. Displacement numbers continue to rise as more people leave their homes and displacement monitoring increases.
