Galmudug Parliament Wednesday passed a bill seeking the creation of a state police force which derives authority and legitimacy from the state law.

The state parliament sitting for the second session since it was elected early this year endorsed the Galmudug Police Force Bill tabled earlier in the month by the Ministry of Security.

Security Minister Ahmed Fiqi hailed the passage of the Bill noting it was instrumental in establishing a professional force anchored in law.

“The adoption of the Galmudug Police Law submitted by the Ministry of Security to Parliament on 13 October 2020 is a victory for the people of Galmudug and the beginning of the formation of the Galmudug Security Forces in a legal manner,” Fiqi said.

He thanked those who took part in drafting the Bill and the state president for providing direction on the Bill.

The passage of the Bill is a step forward in maintsreaming the security sector and confining their operations within the scope of the law to avoid abuses including human rights violations.
