Danab forces carried out a planned operation on Sunday morning in the Lower Shabelle region of South West State.
The Somali military said that the highly-trained commando unit searched homes in Leego and Jameo, looking for Al-Shabaab fighters who they believed were hiding in the drought-stricken area.
The commander of the 4th Brigade, 16th Battalion, Mohamed Abdikadir Ali, who led the raid, said they had destroyed al-Shabaab “extortion centers.” He said they would continue the operation until the military cleared it of the militant insurgency group.
The military did not say whether any arrests were made.
The US-trained Danab force is the most elite unit in the Somali National Army and specializes in urban and rural environments.
